Dr. Anderson P. Smith is an accomplished educator, writer, and advocate for empowering individuals through the transformative power of creative expression. With a Ph.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University, specializing in English education, Dr. Smith is driven by a profound commitment to rehabilitation and personal growth. His expertise lies in teaching creative writing in challenging environments such as medium and maximum-security prisons in New York, where he is a teaching artist with Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) to empower individuals.


Dr. Smith's academic journey showcases his remarkable versatility and deep understanding of his field. He has earned multiple master's degrees, including Philosophy, Education with a focus on English instruction, and Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Anchored by a bachelor's degree in Communications, Dr. Smith possesses excellent communication skills that enable him to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds.


Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has engaged with students at all stages of their educational journey, providing personalized guidance and support throughout the writing process. His extensive tutoring and teaching experience have led him to facilitate numerous literacy and creative writing workshops in both medium and maximum-security prisons, including the infamous Rikers Island complex in New York City.


In addition to his work within correctional institutions, Dr. Smith actively shares his knowledge and insights at local and international conferences and gatherings. His workshops and lectures have been featured at prestigious events like the World Literacy Summit in Oxford, UK, as well as the American Educational Research Association (AERA), National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA), and National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). By focusing on critical subjects such as literacy and metacognition, Dr. Smith inspires educators and practitioners to embrace effective teaching strategies that make a lasting impact.


Currently, Dr. Anderson P. Smith serves as the Assistant Director for Research Compliance Education at Columbia University. In this role, he develops educational programs on research compliance and research ethics for the Columbia research community, encompassing faculty, staff, students, and post-doctoral research fellows.
